I have been exploring the structure of the body and botanical imagery for some time; looking at both plant life and systems and organs of the human form, substituting and embellishing along the way. COVID19 centered in the respiratory system. At the same time, the eruption of demonstrations connected to the Black Lives Matter movement and George Floyd’s cries of “I can’t breathe”, caused me to focus on the lungs. Taking a breath is so automatic and at the same time, so crucial for survival. Having a studio practice during the pandemic helped me to direct my emotions into something tangible. This series is still evolving.
